We are continuing to learn how to write cursive Hebrew letters. The students focused on forming the letters correctly and reading words written in cursive script. This week, we reviewed the letters up to “ע”. We learned that there are 5 letters that do not start from the top as “ט” and ל.

Homework:
First grader are learning their vocabulary words very well.
There will be two days of homework instead of three days.
Therefore, the vocabulary test will be on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

Parashat Hashavua:
This Friday you will find in your child’s folder a picture page with a summary of the story of Parashat :ויקרא"”. We learned that the Jews brought korbanot because the process of bringing a korban helped them become close to hashem.

This Shabbat called Shabbat Zachor ("Sabbath [of] remembrance שבת זכור) it is the Shabbat before Purim , the holiday on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's (There is a tradition from the Talmud that Haman, the antagonist of the Purim story, was a descendant of Amalek) plot to destroy the Jewish people. The weekly Torahreading is supplemented with the Zachor ("Remember!") reading in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek.
When the Israelites left Egypt, no nation dared pick a fight with them. Who would start up with a people whose G‑d just smacked around the mighty Egypt with ten awesome plagues, and drowned the surviving few in the sea? Only Amalek, driven by profound hatred which defied logic, came to wage battle.

ויקהל 2016

What’s in the box?
This week we read the story called “Dan Ve Dina naganim” (The story is about children named Dan and Dina who play musical instruments). I brought to the class my own musical instrument in a big box. I asked the children to guess what musical instrument was in the box and only one was able to guess correctly!  (Ask your child what instrument it was, or flip the page and look at the picture.). I explained what the instrument was and I played some songs the students knew.
